Ashland, Oregon at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Love's Labor's Lost by William Shakespeare directed by Amanda Dehnert After I wrote my delayed review of Manahatta last month I was ready to post my season ratings for the excellent 2018 OSF season. I lined up all my reviews, added in the Romeo and Juliet we didn't see because of smoke, and set about to rank the plays. I got to 10. But, there were 11 productions this year. I initially thought I mistagged a review in the blog, so I searched though my posts.  Nope. Only 9 plays plus R&J. I went to the OSF [...]

Day 27 — MUNI Meets Her Grandmother and Aunt!

By |2018-10-20T19:33:30-07:00October 20, 2018|dachshunds|

I came back home from the gym this morning, and Geoffrey announced that he'd introduced MUNI to Aunt Apex in the whelping box. The meeting went well. When he brought Apex into the TV room and approached the box, Geoffrey said that Zenith was in the box with MUNI, wagging her tail in greeting. Apex sniffed and met MUNI. They seemed to get along. Geoffrey reported that he removed Apex only when she started digging at the towels trying to rearrange the decor. Later I was invited in to witness MUNI's meeting with her grandmother. Day 27 -- SeQueL [...]

Day 26 — There’s a World Out There!

By |2018-10-20T19:37:36-07:00October 19, 2018|dachshunds|

MUNI definitely started noticing the world today! First off, at breakfast time for the pack, Zenith was chowing down in the kitchen when she heard MUNI crying in the TV room. MUNI has made crying noises before as she searched for mom in the whelping box or wanted to complain briefly about some outrage, but this was different. MUNI had noticed that she was alone, and had a real need for companionship. Squeal! So, Zenith moved and finished her bowl of food in the whelping box next to MUNI. MUNI took notice of us both in the room and quieted [...]

Day 25 — A Day of Growing and Being Watched

By |2018-10-20T10:25:01-07:00October 18, 2018|dachshunds|

No news today! Well, there was the 24-hour 1.5 oz gain in weight, to 35.3 oz. But, fortunately, that's a continuation of the healthy trend and not newsy! Day 25- Zenith and Galen tending to MUNI MUNI was fairly quiet. She's crawling, using her legs more, but not walking yet. Day 25- MUNI being Petted, not Measured! Another day in the life of a growing pup!

Day 24 — First Checkup and First Nail Trimming

By |2018-10-18T13:12:12-07:00October 17, 2018|dachshunds|

Zenith and MUNI almost slept through the night! True, bedtime after Sweat last night was late, around 11. But, the girls didn't ask for attention until 4:30 this morning. This is a big improvement over the every-two-hour timetable of recent nights. And, Zenith allowed us all to sleep for another hour and didn't inquire about breakfast until 5:40ish. Day 24 -- MUNI's First Nail Clipping. Geoffrey is both the nail trimmer and hand model. But, the main news today was that MUNI got peoplehandled! First off, Geoffrey put her on the scale to discover that she gained 1.4 ounces [...]

Day 23 — Steady as She Goes

By |2018-10-17T11:22:10-07:00October 16, 2018|dachshunds|

Today was a happily unremarkable day. MUNI gained only .4 oz in the last day. No worries! She looks healthy, and she and Zenith spent most of the day contentedly together in the whelping box. Geoffrey says that he heard little "Grrr!" noises coming from MUNI when he rubbed her side this morning. We hope that she inherits that gruntle noise of her grandmother. Zenith has decided straight Science Diet wet puppy food is yummy, and she NEEDS a 2:30 midday feeding. If I try to sneak some kibble into her food, I get met with puzzled tail wagging from [...]

Day 22 — Three Weeks Old and A Two-Pound Whopper!

By |2018-10-15T16:10:12-07:00October 15, 2018|dachshunds|

Geoffrey was up early today to do a full day at the office on the tax deadline day (this never happens, but this year is "different"), so the morning weighing was early, at 7:10. But, MUNI made her goal!  She's an even 32 ounces! MUNI, All 32 ounces of her, still fits in one hand. (Don't forget you can click on the pictures a couple times to see a full-size photo!) We think that MUNI reacts a bit more to the humans every day. She is comfortable in our arms. MUNI has the Yawn Action Down Cold! [...]

Day 21 — Inflating the Puppy

By |2018-10-15T11:52:30-07:00October 14, 2018|dachshunds|

Sometimes puppies need inflating... Day 21 -- Inflating a Puppy Fortunately, Geoffrey is an expert and can get a puppy so comfortable that her tongue falls out of her mouth! And, that leads to mega-yawns! MUNI and the pack at home had a stress-free day of sleeping and eating. MUNI was 30.7 oz at breakfast. She acts like she has set a personal goal of two pounds by tomorrow, and she's been spending the day nursing to meet the target! Unfortunately, Geoffrey's Worst Tax Season Ever is continuing, and he worked the entire day.  He arrived back home [...]

Day 20 — Personality Happens

By |2018-10-15T10:50:54-07:00October 13, 2018|dachshunds|

MUNI is showing her eyes more... well, a little more. She still is crawling around the whelping box making determined moves toward Mother and food without noticing her surroundings too much. But, here eyes are open more. She doesn't have much reaction to any human she sees. About the biggest reaction she'll give is cuddling motions and sucking when we pet her and blow on her face and neck. Zenith is very good protective mother. So, when we want to weigh and hold MUNI, we have to send Zenith out of the room. Then we weigh and pose. Day [...]

Day 19 – The Aperture Got Us

By |2018-10-15T10:50:25-07:00October 12, 2018|dachshunds|

Today's update is more about the limits of photography than it's about raising a puppy. Remember, because MUNI just opened her eyes, we are not using flash for a while. When you take a picture in low light one way to make the image visible is to open up the lens aperture. (Read Wikipedia on lens aperture settings.) The aperture settings are delineated in f-stops. Higher number f-stops indicating smaller lens openings (less light) and lower f-stop numbers indicate a larger lens opening for more light. My camera's lens have f-stops from 22 to 2.8. 2.8 is pretty good at [...]
